| Abstract: | Cynolebias periodicus, new species is described from the temporary floodplains of the rio Santa Maria, a tributary of the rio Ibicuí, rio Uruguai basin, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is considered to be closely related to C. nigripinnis, C. affinis, C. gymnoventris and C. cyaneus, with which it shares dorsal-fin origin anterior to anal-fin origin and a predominantly dark gray to black clororation in male. It is distinguished by the combination of characters involving head shape, recuced contact organs in scales, scaled venter and opercular region, and color pattern of body and fins of male. Member of the clade Austrolebias alexandri species group (Costa). |
