Abstract: Commercial imports
Synonyms:
Type Locality: The Bellavista area is approximately 10 miles further down the Amazon from this type locality, (River Itanyi ) on a cross section to another tributary.
Distribution: Collected near Bellavista, Peru.
Biotope:
Size: 12 cm
Characteristics: Import into UK April 2003: large cigar-shaped fish similar to "pike" and they "strike" at live food in a similar fashion. The males have a black outer margin all around the caudal fin. The body has 6 - 7 horizontal lines of spots running from ebhind the gills to the base of the caudal fin: the lines are alternatively red and orange in colouration.
Variations: There seem to be some variations circulating from three or more imports. Some imported in 2002 have red and yellow spots as opposed to red and orange spots and an import into the UK in July 2003 had males with a large orange spot near the gills. We will post an update when the next generation of the April/July 2003 imports mature.
History:
  • Commercial imports:
  • 2002 - into the USA?
  • 2003 April - into UK (TAAG)
  • 2003 July - into UK (TAAG)

    Populations:
  • "Bellavista" TAAG
  • Breeding: The fish will fight so need to keep them in a larger tank with plenty of cover and well fed. From experiences with the wild caught fish, females will harass and bully other females and males will kill females, and females kill males on occasion.

We will have to wait to see how the second generation fish interact when they are raised in a large mixed group.
    Incubation: [24 - 27șC] 14 - 16 weeks

The eggs can be water incubated but when they are fully eyed-up you need to add colder peat-stained water to force them to hatch.
    Egg Diameter: 2 mm
