Abstract: Member of the Rivulus atratus species group, that includes Rivulus amanapira, Rivulus atratus, Rivulus ornatus, Rivulus rectocaudatus, Rivulus romeri, Rivulus tecminae and Rivulus uakti.
Synonyms:
  • "Spadefin Rivulus"
  • Rivulus NSC-3 (1971, A. Castro)
  • Type Locality: "Vivero Forestal El Varillal" (4º 04 S, 73º 27 W) 34 km from Iquitos on the road to Nauta.
Distribution: The species is found in 2 locations, El Varillal and Quisto Cocha in Peru, where it is abundant & sympatric with other Rivulus.
Biotope: Sympatric with Rivulus intermittens at El Varillal. Sympatric with Rivulus rubrolineatus and Rivulus speciosus at Quisto Cocha ("Quisto Lake") situated 15km to the southwest of Iquitos. The lake is bordered by a marshy zone containing characteristic marshy vegetation. The marsh is criss-crossed by small creeks. In the marsh proper, there are small pools of water that are only a few centimeters deep rising to 10 to 20cm when it rains. Here is where the sympatric species are to be found. This is also the place where the only specimen of Rivulus sp. "Quisto Cocha" was found.
    Size: 6 cm
Characteristics: The body is slightly striped and coloured light brown to pale iridescent green, interspersed with orange spots. Bright orange-yellow spots on the ventral, anal and caudal fins. Slight sexual dimorphism. Rivulus spot on both sexes, at the base of the caudal peduncle, which is very faint on males. The posterior edge of the caudal fin is straight.
