| Abstract: | Discovered in 1925 in a small tributary of the river Approuague in Brazil by an expedition led by Dr Carl Ternetz. Of the known species of the genus, Rivulus xiphidius is undoubtedly the most colourful jewel. |

| Type Locality: | |
| Distribution: | The coastal regions of French Guinea, Guyana and Surinam. |
| Biotope: | The geographical area is shared with some other Rivulus species, e.g. Rivulus geayi, Rivulus agilae, Rivulus aff. Holmiae and Rivukus urophalmus. In all localities there is some decaying biomass at the bottom of the body of water. The water hardness was 0 to 1° DH and the pH about 5. |

| Breeding: | Breeding Rivulus xiphidius is not easy for several reasons. They are not very prolific, producing a maximum of 15 eggs per week. Specimens need to be mature, aged between 12 and 18 months to breed. Breeders need to be well fed with live food. Eggs need hatching in aged tank water with a pH of 5 - 6 with a hardness of 0.2 - 1° DH. Some males are incapable of fertilising eggs. Sometimes, mature breeding specimens will stop breeding for weeks. |
| Incubation: | Water storage in aged tank water at pH 5 - 6 hatch in 20 - 40 days depending on temperature. |
