Abstract: Simpsonichthys similis sp.n., is described from the rio Urucuia drainage of the rio São Francisco basin, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brazil.It seems to be closely related to S. notatus from the rio Paranã drainage of the rio Tocantins basin.Among other characters, male of both species share an apomorphic black blotch on middle of body side.The two species are easily distinguished by some characters of colour pattern of males.
