Eggs of Austrolebias alexandri "Los Lapachitos"

David Baker SAA037

The parents :

I obtained a reverse trio of Austrolebias alexandri "Los Lapachitos" in the auction of show fish at the BKA Convention 2002 (Alberto Reis). Almost 6 months later they are still looking in fine health and breeding well. I have two 5 litre clear plastic containers in which I keep them. I rotate the males every two weeks for breeding. The breeding container has 2cm of peat lining the bottom and has a generous clump of java moss and floating plants. I feed them some occasional flake food, live and frozen bloodworm and daphnia but they are fed daily on white worms gut-loaded with flake food.

Incubating the eggs :

I tried incubating batches of eggs at 21ºC, 24ºC and 27ºC :-

  • At 21ºC they took 16 to 20 weeks
  • At 24ºC they took 14 - 16 weeks
  • At 27ºC the eggs disintegrated
  • Eggs a few days after collection at 3rd November 2002.
Eggs on 2nd February 2003 after first wetting.
Eggs on 6th March 2003 just before hatching.
